Please plan to join us on Sunday afternoon November 12 as we offer you the opportunity to meet renowned local artist Howard Watson and to view some of his artwork. Our reception, from 1 – 4pm is free and open to the public.
Howard’s work will be available for sale, with proceeds going to Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Howard Watson of Wyncote received his formal art training at the Pennsylvania State University, Temple University’s Tyler School of Fine Art, and the University School of Arts. He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art.” Mr. Watson is known for his watercolors, which frequently depict scenes of Philadelphia and the surrounding Delaware Valley. He has taught art classes at many art centers and colleges and has conducted watercolor workshops in Austria, Switzerland, France, Scotland, Canada, and Norway. Most recently, he has taught at the Woodmere Museum in Chestnut Hill.
Because of his local roots and subjects, his works have always been popular in the Philadelphia area. However, Mr. Watson has served as Artist-in-Residence at the White House during the Carter administration and provided art for President Bill Clinton and for Vice President Walter Mondale. Other collectors of his art include Hall of Fame basketball coach Jack Ramsey and singer Perry Como.
The charity that Mr. Watson supports is Variety, the Children’s Charity. For those who aren’t familiar with this organization, it was founded in Pittsburgh on October 10, 1927, when eleven men involved in show business set up a social club which they named the “Variety Club.”
On Christmas Eve 1928 a baby was left on the steps of the Sheridan Square Film Theatre, with a note from the baby’s heartbroken mother that explained her dire circumstances and that she was counting on the goodness of show business people to look after her child. The Variety Club undertook to fund the child’s living expenses and education and later decided to raise funds for other disadvantaged children – a mission that continues to this day.
